It can take an individual up to two years to develop social language.

Depending on an individual’s prior schooling experience and their proficiency in their first language, it can take anywhere from 5 to 10 years to close the academic language gap in the areas of listening, speaking, reading and writing.

Michigan has adopted the World-Class Instructional Design and Assessment (WiDA) for our ELs. We have joined 38 other states who follow the same protocol in identifying and assessing students who are new to the country, speak or have a second language spoken in the home. After your child takes the WIDA Screener (initial screener) and/or Spring WiDA ACCESS Summative Assessment, they are given a level 1-6 (Entering to Bridging). To learn more about what the levels mean and what their test results show, click here.
